In 1939, in the wake of the failure of the Evian Conference on the Jewish refugee problem and in view of Britain’s intention to severely restrict Jewish immigration to Palestine, Britain proposed her South American Crown Colony of Guiana as a site for Jewish immigration and settlement. Perhaps the British proposal was disingenuous, for needless to say, nothing came of the report. See A.J. Sherman, Island Refuge: Britain and Refugees from the Third Reich (1994) see pp. 230-35.
