Philip II of Portugal (and Spain) was most sympathetic to the so-called New Christians, i.e., Christians of Jewish descent who were treated as social pariahs. In this Edict, Philip threatens with fines, confiscations and imprisonment anyone calling another “New Christian,” or “Marrano” or “Jew.” See A.S. Saraiva, H.P. Salomon, I.S.D. Sassoon, The Marrano Factory: The Portuguese Inquisition and Its New Christians, 1536-1765 (2001) p. 139.
