Carbonear is a town on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, one of the oldest European settlements in North America. Life in the British Empire’s oldest colony, which only joined Canada in 1949, was notoriously tough, but still managed to attract a certain number of hardy settlers. At the time of this document, however, there was just one Jewish family on the island, that of the merchant, Simon Levi. In this legal instrument he delegates the right dispose of property in Carbonear on his behal.
