The German Orientalist Johann Heinrich Callenberg (1694-1760) served as Professor of Theology and later Professor of Philology at the University of Halle. In 1728, Callenberg established the Institutum Judaicum, the first German Protestant mission to the Jews. See EJ, Vol. VIII, col. 2.
