A highly polished and most lyrical scene by Kaufmann, the most celebrated artist of all 19th- and early 20th-century Jewish portrait painters. NOT USED: Isidor Kaufmann (1853-1921) is today regarded as Jewish Arts’ most important artist. His paintings were highly popular among the wealthy salons of urban Jews, especially within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In this soothing Austrian rural landscape the softness of color and line underscores Kaufmann’s movement into a more impressionistic style. The lighter brushwork makes this a far more lyrical painting and an interesting contrast to Kaufmann’s religious portraits that are almost always darker. The present painting is complemented by a most striking rococo style frame. For more on the artist, see the excellent and comprehensive exhibition catalogue issued by the Juedischen Museum der Stadt Wein, G.T. Natter (ed.) "Isidor Kaufmann" (1995).
