Besides providing the geography of Egypt, the author traces its history through the ages, including the Coptic era, the Islamic conquest, followed by Ottoman rule and the Mamluke rebellion, culminating with the French invasion under Napoleon in 1798. The author treats most sympathetically the French administration's attempt at modernization, short-lived though it was.
