The Skulener Rebbe remained in Eastern Europe after World War II and actively sought to repatriate Jewish children who had been hidden among gentiles to escape certain death. In 1959 he and his son (the present Rebbe), were jailed by the Communist authorities in Romania for their activities in encouraging Jewish eduction. After much political pressure, they were released and emigrated to New York three years later. See T. Z. Rabinowicz, The Encyclopedia of Hasidism p. 173
