R. Jacob Israel Kanievsky (1899-1985), known as the "Steipeler Gaon" after his hometown of Hornosteipel in the Ukraine, served briefly as Rosh Yeshivah of the Novardok Yeshivah "Beth Joseph" in B'nei Braq. Renowned both for his Talmudic genius—as witnessed in the many volumes of Kehillth Ya'akov on the Talmud—and his piety, many sought out his blessings. He was a brother in law of the Chazon Ish. Today, his son R. Chaim Kanievsky of B'nei Braq (b. 1928) follows in his father's footsteps as one of the great men of the generation — both in terms of literary prolificity and piety.
