In addition to his stature as the predominant Talmudist of his day, R. Chaim was a paragon of charity and communal activity. In the present letter Chief Rabbi Kook is requested to do all he can to assist the individual that R. Chaim praises here - who unfortunately is currently in depressed circumstances - it is a “matter of Piku’ach Nephesh." R.
