Dutch physician Olfert Dapper (1636-1689) travelled to Africa, China, Persia, Georgia and Arabia, leaving a rich geographical and historical record of his travels. His travelogue of Syria and the Holy Land first appeared in Dutch under the title, Beschryving van gantsch Syrie en Palestyn of Heilige Landt (Amsterdam, 1677).
