The Bibliotheca Rabbinica is the first scientifically organized bibliography of Jewish literature, alphabetically listing by title 324 Hebrew works. Buxtorf’s system influenced the physiognomy of Hebrew bibliography by introducing the title arrangement, a method that became the standard practice in Hebrew bibliography. His preference for this were two-fold: a title-listing eliminates the complication of establishing the identity and correct form of name of the Hebrew author, moreover, mosts Hebrew texts were better known by their title rather than by their author. In 1640, Johannes Buxtorf the Younger, prepared an enlarged and corrected second edition of his father’s work to which he added an appendix, with an author index. The present third edition is a reprint of the second, with corrections. See S. Brisman, A History and Guide to Judaic Bibliography, Vol. I (1977), pp. 3-5
