The author of Chen Tov hailed from Safed and frequently cites his mentor R. Solomon Sagis as well as other great scholars of Safed. His fellow student, Joseph di Trani (the Mahri”t) quotes Halevi’s work in Tzophnath Pane’ach and refers to him as his “colleague in Torah and Mitzvoth” Tzvi Hirsch Lehren (1784-1853) of Amsterdam, was the administrator of the Pekidim and Amarkalim Society, a charitable fund that disbursed monies collected in Western Europe to provide for the welfare of the Jews of Eretz Israel. Lehren was also a staunch defender of traditional Orthodoxy against the inroads of Reform.
