R. Jacob Emden suspected the author R. Yechiel Michel Epstein of being a follower of the pseudo-messiah Shabbtai Tzvi. An indication of this is found in the final words of the Author's preface of this work, "mashi'ach ha-amiti" ("the true Messiah"), whose numerical value of 814 is equal to that of Shabbtai Tzvi.
