Slovakian-born J.H. Hertz (1872-1946), the first graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (1894), served for some years as Rabbi of Johannesburg, South Africa. Hertz's outspoken opposition to the Boers led to his deportation from South Africa (1899-1901); at the conclusion of the Boer War he was reinstated. In 1913 Hertz was elected Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth, a position he held until his death. EJ, Vol. VIII, cols. 397-8
