The lion's portion of the book (pp. 1-188) consists of "Vosemnadtzat Evreiskikh Nadgrobnykh Nadpisei iz Kryma," a Russian translation of Prof. Daniel Chwolson's research paper, "Achtzehn Hebraische Grabschriften aus der Krim," published a year earlier in the Memoires of the St. Petersburg Academy of Science. When the Karaite scholar Abraham Firkovich was accused of falsification of the tombstone inscriptions from the ancient Jewish cemetery of Cufut-Kale in the Crimea, Prof. Chwolson defended him and the authenticity of his recorded history
