SALANT, JOSEPH ZUNDEL

Letter Signed, addressed to the Jewish community of Tilsit (East Prussia), acknowledging a donation conveyed by R. Elijah Guttmacher of Greidetz

Brown ink on blue watermarked paper, with stamp of Aschkenazic Community of Jerusalem, signed “Zundel Salant,” together with two other signatories

Jerusalem: Adar, 1861

Est: $6,000 - $8,000
R. Joseph Zundel Salant (1786-1866), an important disciple of R. Chaim of Volozhin, was the mentor of R. Israel Salanter (Lipkin). The latter credited R. Zundel with being the inspiration in the development of the Mussar Movement in Lithuania. After his aliyah in 1837, R. Zundel was one of the administrators of the Aschkenazic comunity of Jerusalem. His son-in-law R. Samuel Salant (1816-1909) became Aschkenazic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem. Due to his extreme modesty, and desire to shun any shard of self-promotion, it is extremely uncommon to find a document signed by R. Zundel Salant
