Born in Yekaterinoslav, Lewin studied at the Slabodka Yeshiva and served as a Rabbi in various towns in the Ukraine. In 1957, he became Principal in the newly inaugurated Yeshiva in the Moscow Great Synagogue. In 1957, he was appointed Chief Rabbi of Moscow as well. Lewin had to walk a difficult line as a semi-offcial spokesman and apologist for Soviet policy in matters of Judaism and as a genuine spiritual leader to his community
