Kennicot’s edition is the earliest attempt to provide a systematic critical edition of the Bible on a large scale. In previous dissertations, Kennicott demonstrated the need for extensive collation of the Hebrew manuscripts of the Old Testament. For ten years, he and his co-workers engaged in this arduous task. During this period he published annual reports of the progress made (see previous lot).
