A. Ch. Ein Güt Heil der Daitschen Cornerschaft! Caricature of Jews engaging in competitive sports

7 x 11 inches (the actual image). Sepia engraving, mounted on oak tag

Austrian Empire, 1888:

Est: $700 - $1,000
In the top left corner, we read “Tarnopol, Dem Sieger” [Tarnopol, the Victor] opposite “Krems, die Jüngfern” [Krems, the Loser]. We also spy the Hebrew words “Kiddush Hashem” [Sanctification of the Name]. At bottom, on a bar-bell, there is provided the date, “1888,” and the artist’s signature, “A. Ch.” Kremsir, Moravia had a Jewish population of 920 in 1897; Tarnopol, in eastern Galicia, had a Jewish population of 14,000 in 1905. See JE, Vol. VII, pp. 573-574; Vol. XII, pp. 63-64. Both were situated witin the farflung Austrian Empire. It stands to reason that the caricature depicts a competition between the Jewish athletic clubs of the two cities
