Below the portrait are the Montefiore coat-of-arms and signature, “Moses Montefiore.” In Hebrew in the mistletoe surround: “Petersburg, Rome, Morocco, Constantinople, Damascus, Jerusalem,” names of places Sir Moses visited in his untiring efforts on behalf of the oppressed Jewish people. Finally, at bottom, the hero is lionized as “Gibor be-milchamoth Hashem, po'el tzedakoth le-amo” [A fighter in the wars of the Lord, a philanthropist to his people]
