Rabbi Saul Loewenstam served as Rabbi of the Aschkenazic community of Amsterdam. His work on the Pentateuch, Binyan Ariel (Amsterdam, 1778), which combines Biblical interpretation with Halacha, is to this day a favorite of that particular genre. In this engraving, the Rabbi is holding his work Binyan Ariel in his hand. The Hebrew epitaph below, informs the reader that Saul succeeded his father [Aryeh Leib] to the “throne” of the Amsterdam rabbinate in 1755 at the age of 38 years. See M.H. Gans, Memorbook (1977), p. 197
