Zemiroth at the Sabbath Table. Signed and dated by artist lower left

Pastel and pen-and-ink. Framed 22.5 x 16.5 inches

Brooklyn, 1971:

Est: $2,000 - $3,000
Zalman Kleinman, a self-taught artist, was a member of a distinguished family of Chabad Chassidim. The consignor of this picture relates that as a young bride, newly religious and a recent arrival to the Lubavitch community of Crown Heights, she was dispirited to find barely a handful of guests in attendance on the evening of her Sheva Brachoth. Seeing her so saddened, Zalman Kleinman invited the young woman to his studio and took from his easel this newly completed picture and gave it to the young woman as a wedding present - having only just met her moments earlier.
