Before being elected president of the assembly, Furtado, a delegate from Bordeaux, had served as syndic of the Portuguese “nation,” which is to say, the Jews of Spanish-Portuguese extraction. He is described as a man who “knew the writers of the eighteenth century better than the Talmud, and sought for truth in Voltaire much more than in any other Jewish or Christian author.” S. Schwarzfuchs, Napoleon, The Jews and the Sanhedrin (1979), p. 60
