Gilles Coignet (Algidius Quintus), was born in Antwerp in 1538 and died in Hamburg in 1599. The Coginet family were famed as engravers. The story of Judith comes from the book of the Apocrypha by that name. According to the story, an Israelite woman Judith seduces the Greek oppressor Holophernes, whom she subsequently beheads. In this scene, we see Judith holding high, the head of the slain villain
