The distinguished Lattes family, whose origin is the town of Lattes in Southern France, left their native Provence for Italy some time in the sixteenth century. Elijah Aaron Lattes (d. 1839) served as rabbi of Venice, as did his grandson Abraham Lattes (1809-1875). See EJ, Vol. X, col. 1460
