Jacques Faitlovich (1881-1955), an observant Jew born in Lodz, Poland, is credited with bringing the existence of the “Beta Israel” of Ethiopia to the awareness of world Jewry. Though many times stymied in his efforts on their behalf, Faitlovich was nevertheless able to establish a school in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to educate young Jews. “Falasha” is the Amharic word by which their Christian neighbors referred to these Jews, it is actually a term of derogation, conveying the sense of “alien.” See EJ, Vol. VI, cols. 1137-8, 1143-1154
