What appears to be a children’s board game is actually a highly sophisticated commentary on the intrigues of the Dreyfus Affair. According to Kleeblatt, the image of a maiden standing atop a well derives from the French saying, “Truth lies at the bottom of the well.” The maiden is dubbed in French, “La Vérité toute nue” (“The stark naked Truth”). See Kleeblatt, The Dreyfus Affair: Art, Truth and Justice (1987), p. 191, pl. 71
