The great kabbalist R. Chaim Joseph David Azulai (Chid”a) (1724-1807) was esteemed by Livornese Jewry, if only for the fact that he spent the last several years of his life there. Though he did not serve in an official capacity as rabbi of Livorno, his final resting place in the local cemetery was greatly revered. The remarks of Azulai in our volume were culled from his own work on Psalms: Yoseph Tehiloth (Livorno, 1794). See JE, Vol. II, pp. 375-6. JNUL has only an incomplete copy of this edition. Perhaps this accounts for Vinograd’s differing collation of ff.108
