The name “Le Moyne” figures prominently in French-Canadian history. Joseph Le Moyne (1668-1734) commanded vessels sent from France to Huron Bay as well as to Florida and Louisiana. With his brothers, he drove the Spaniards from Pensacola, after which he fortified Mobile and expelled the Spaniards from Ile Dauphin. He was promoted captain in 1720, and in 1722 became Governor of Rochefort, France, where he died in 1734
