RARE EDITION OF RASHI’S COMMENTARY According to a legendary tradition, the opening comment of Rash”i to the Pentateuch, which he attributes to “Rabbi Isaac,” is by the exegete’s father. Supposedly, the dutiful son wished thereby to pay tribute to his father’s memory. In fact, this comment in the name of “Rabbi Isaac” is traced back to Tanchuma Vetus (Midrash Tanchuma Yashan). See R. Menachem M. Kasher, Torah Sheleimah, Genesis 1:1; R. Chaim Joseph David Azulai, Shem ha-Gedolim I Sh-35
