Giovanni Maria Vincenti, a cleric born in Venice, mounts the usual missionary arguments seeking to prove the verity of Christianity from Judaic sources. As an afterthought, the author calls for the expulsion of the Jews from the Venetian state. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the threat of expulsion was held over the heads of Venetian Jewry as a Damocles’ sword. See EJ, Vol. XVI, col. 96. The book abounds in theological mistakes, for which it was criticized by Giulio Bartolocci and others. Eventually, on June 18th, 1680, it was listed on the Church’s Index of Proscribed Books.
