After the fiasco of of the Slavita - Vilna controversy, the third generation of the Shapiro family moved their press and produced their edition of theTalmud in Zhitomir. Many Chassidic Rabbis encouraged their followers only to study the Talmud printed by the Shapiro Brothers as they were of impeccable Chassidic geneaology - the grandchildren of R. Pinchos of Koretz. It is felt that an aura of holiness pervades the work of this family, especially the brothers from Slavita, who “ran the gauntlet,” as explained in the lot describing the Slavita edition.
