After the French Revolution, following the annexation to France in 1798, the Jews of Turin enjoyed greater liberty and were no longer compelled to live in the Ghetto. With the fall of Napoleon in 1814, the new king Victor Emmanuel I returned the Jews to the ghetto but exempted them from wearing the special badge.
