There is considerable confusion regarding the date of the first edition of this seminal Chassidic work. Friedberg (Lamed 622) records 1806, however, this is a clear misreading of the chronogram. Ben Ya’akov and Weiner correctly present the date as 1808. Yaari, in Ha’dephus Ha’ivri Be’ostraha (in: Alei Sepher, vol. I (1975), p. 123, no. 34), records that the publishers of the second edition (1821) state that, “the first edition was published 13 years ago in Ostrog” The present copy is therefore the definative First Edition.
