The Pro-Jerusalem Society was founded in 1918 and chaired by Herbert Samuel. Its’ mission was to focus upon the many aspects of civic life in the ancient city that the Military Authorities were not equiped to deal with. The objects of the Society, as defined in the Charter were: “the preservation and advancement of the interests of Jerusalem, its district and inhabitants.” Including, the protection of and adition to the amenities of Jerusalem, the provision and maintenance of parks, gardens and open spaces, the establishment of Museums, Libraries and Art Galleries, the protection and preservation of Antiquities and the encouragement of arts in the district of Jerusalem
