The Assembly of Jewish Notables evolved into the Paris Sanhedrin which formulated rulings concerning civil issues that faced the Jews who had become enfranchised citizens of a centralized modern democratic state. See, in general, S. Schwarzfuchs, Napoleon, the Jews and the Sanhedrin ( 1979) pp.88-114 Abraham Furtado played an active role in France prior to the Revolution. During the Revolution, he was proscribed with the federalist-minded Girondins. After the downfall of Robespierre and the rise of the Emperor Napoleon, he returned to public life. He was elected president of the Assembly of Jewish Notables (1806–07) convened by Napoleon and acted as general-secretary to the Paris Sanhedrin
