Abraham Furtado played an active role in France prior to the Revolution. During the Revolution, he was proscribed with the federalist-minded Girondins. After the downfall of Robespierre and the rise of the Emperor Napoleon, he returned to public life. He was elected president of the Assembly of Jewish Notables (1806–07) convened by Napoleon and acted as general-secretary to the Paris Sanhedrin
