It is unusual to find three Hebrew volumes with uniform customised silver bindings. These three prayer books comprise the liturgy for the entire Jewish year. The owner clearly had Italian sympathies; the festival prayers, though printed in Vienna are prepared for the communities of Italy and the three volumes are linked by the exquisite Italian binding that they share. Lavishly bound Hebrew prayer-books became preferred wedding gifts, often decorated with the crests, or symbols, of the two marital families.
