General Peron’s accession to power raised fears among Argentina’s Jewish population due to his close association with the Fascist organization Alianza Libertadora Nacionalista. The concern of Argentinian Jewry was partially dispelled by the introduction of an anti-racial discrimination clause into the Argentinian Constitution in 1949. On November 6th, 1953, Peron’s historic declaration of sympathy for the rights of Jews and for the State of Israel offered further security to Argentina’s Jews. However, despite these measures, anti-Semitic attacks and neo-Nazi activity continued. The country was closed to Jewish immigration from Europe while thousands of escaping Nazis and their sympathizers, most notoriously, Adolf Eichman, were welcomed
