“This is to Certify that Joshua Pickering has enrolled his name in Company G of Cameron Dragoons, to serve during the Pending War.” The “Cameron Dragoons”- the 65th Regiment of the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry, was one of three Jewish Regiments in the Civil War. The Commanding Officer, Col. Max Friedman along with a large proportion of his officers and 1200 men were Jewish. The Cameron Dragoons, named in honor of Simon Cameron, the Secretary of War was at the center of the debate over the deployment of Jewish Chaplians in the military.
