Composed to be recited by the Shomrim La’boker society of the Usiglio Family Synagogue in the town of Modena, where Carmi served as Cantor. His piyutim display marked kabbalistic influences. The Aschkenazic societies of Shomerim La’boker (“Watchers of the Dawn”) would recite hymns in the pre- dawn of Monday and Thursday mornings. This pious brotherhood fostered the singing of hymns led by their own precantor, often had hymn-texts published. For a discussion of their significance in the history of Jewish Liturgy, see EJ XI, col. 615
