LOTZKI, ABRAHAM (Ed.) Shivchei Todah LeKir”ah (le’Kaiser Yarom Hoda’ah) [song of praise in honor of Czar Nicholas I]

Hebrew and Judeo-Tatar ff. (8). Stained in places, first two leaves neatly re-hinged. Recent paper boards. 4to Vinograd, Eupatoria 2; Mehlman, 1833

Goslow (Eupatoria): n.p 1833

Est: $2,000 - $2,500
The first dated Hebrew book printed in Eupatoria. This copy with the rare title-page, unknown to Mehlman. Devotional poems by Abraham Firkovich and others, composed in gratitude to the Czar for exempting Karites from Military Service and for drafting only the “Talmudic Jews.” A remarkable volume, that testifies to the rift between the Karaites and traditional Jewry - still so pervasive in the 19th century
