Though excluded from France, in this earlier period the Jews were allowed to live in the Comtat Venaissin (Papal enclave in Southern France). They formed four communities; Avignon, Carpentras, Cavaillon and L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The Comtat Venaissin belonged to the Papacy up untill the French Revolution
