To counter allegations that ethrog-fruits grown in the Porgues neighborhood of the Greek Island of Corfu were grafted with lemons and other citrus fruits to enhance their beauty, the Community of Trieste who served as the brokers in the importation of Corfu ethrogs to Continental Europe, attached this Certificate of Authenticity to each box of six that passed through their hands. The document, complete with the wax seal of the Trieste Jewish Community, attests that the Rabbi of Corfu and the Jews of that community personally witnessed the entire growing process, from planting to picking to packaging and that there was no grafting of any kind involved. “They are whole and perfect and fit for use by all of Israel who are particular in the Mitzvoth.”
