The First Book Printed in Jerusalem. A collection of seven small treatises on Halachah, Minhag and Nusscha’oth of Prayer NOT USED IN CAT . HOLD FOR LATER USE.... Chaim Joseph David Azulai (1724-1806) was without exaggeration the greatest Sephardic sage of the modern era. His literary output was extremely prodigious, encompassing both Halachah and Kabbalah. His bibliographic work Shem ha-Gedoim is still a valuable reference. it is perhaps ironic that this enormous intellect was never ensconced in a formal rabbinic capacity. Most of Chida’s days were spent wandering as a Shada”r or rabbinic emmisary on behalf of the Holy Land. Some years ago, his earthly remains were disinterred from the Jewish cemetery of Livorno, Italy, where he last resided, and transfered to Har ha-Menuchoth cemetery in the Givath Sha’ul section of Jerusalem.
