The Conference of Delegates to Consider Modifications in the Services of the Synagogues made various recommendations to shorten the liturgy of Synagogue services. Under the governance of Chief Rabbi Dr. Nathan Adler, every effort was made to preserve the custom that had previously been followed in United Synagogues. “The main principle which has guided me in my decisions is this: I have sanctioned those modifications which do not impair the integrity of our Book of prayers, and which do not infringe upon Dinim prescribed in the Shulchan Aruch. In accordance with this principle I have acceded to the request of the Conference to sanction the omission of the Piyutim on Sabbath and Festivals. I entertain the earnest hope that the shortening of the Shacharith, casued by this modification will induce a much larger proportion of Congregants to attend at this important part of the Service. I must however, request the Baords of Managment of the several Synagogues not to postpone the commencement of the Shacharith to a later hour in the day, so that our traditional ordinances with respect to Keriath Shemah and Tephilah may not be violated.” (N. Adler)
