French illustrator and Dreyfusard, Hermann-Paul brought his skill at caricature in support of Alfred Dreyfus’ cause with numerous satirical journals. An ardent revisionist, many of Hermann-Paul’s drawings appeared in Félex Vallotton’s journal Le Cri de Paris. Indeed, he was one of the principal illustrators of the journal supporting the Dreyfus cause. Images relating to the Dreyfus Affair comprise most of this album and includes Paul’s eloquent response to Zola’s “j’Accuse” which appeared in the 16 January 1898 edition of Le Cri de Paris on p. 10. Another compilation of Hermann-Paul’s images, “Guignols,” was issued in 1899. See P. D. Cate, The Paris Cry: Graphic Artists and the Dreyfus Affair pp. 88-89 in; N.L. Kleeblatt, The Dreyfus Affair: Art, Truth & Justice (1987)
