Following Emille Zola’s challenge to the French army in the cause of Alfred Dreyfus, the battle between the Dreyfusards and the anti-Dreyfusards was no more energeticaly and artfully fought than on the pages of the French illutrated press. Among the principal caricaturists for the Dreyfusards, journalist and illustrator Henri-Gabriel Ibels co- founded “Le Sifflet,” a journal containing only captioned illustrations, with the specific purpose of promoting the revision of the Dreyfus case. In Allons-y! published in 1898, Ibels recounts the events surrounding the Dreyfus Affair thus far and incorporates all of his illustrations for Le Siffet up to that point. See P. D. Cate, The Paris Cry: Graphic Artists and the Dreyfus Affair pp. 90-94 in N.L. Kleeblatt, The Dreyfus Affair
