Moroccan born, ibn Attar, renowned as a saintly Kabbalist, migrated to Eretz Israel, temporarily settling in Acre due to an epidemic raging elsewhere in the country. Upon arriving in Jerusalem he established the Midrash Keneset Israel Yeshivah in order to attract students from the Disapora and thus, he anticipated, hasten the Redemption. The Or Ha-Chaim Bible commentary was circulated extensively in Germany and Poland where it achieved great popularity especially among the Chassidim. Of historical note, this magnum opus is offered at auction on the 259th anniversay (15th Tammuz) of the Or Hachaim’s death
