American Jews during the Colonial period were predominantly members of the merchant class. Upon the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, American Jews expressed their sympathies with the Patriotic cause by offering their services not just as soldiers but also as merchants, ensuring that Continental soldiers and militiamen were supplied with goods and services, including food, munitions, weapons and clothing as well as banking and financial services and transportation. This receipt documents such participation in the Patriot cause. The Philadelphia Jew, Jacob Cohen only a few months after the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 provided the Continental army with “60 pair of Buck skin Breeches” for a sum of 120 pounds
