The supplemented “Gesänge” is the first German languague liturgical publication, and thus ONE OF THE EARLIEST LITURGICAL PUBLICATIONS OF THE REFORM MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES. The first Reform Hebrew prayer-book in America was published the previous year. The Hamburg Gebetbuch remained popular among early American Reform communities and these two works were evidently bound together at an early stage. Later in the century, the American Reform movement grew to be more radical than it’s European counterpart
